Is An E-Cigarette Right For You?

August 22nd, 2009

Smoking has always bothered me.  I remember being stuck in a car with one of my friend’s parents when I was young.  The windows were up and his Dad was smoking a cigarette.  The odor and fumes were intoxicating, leaving me with a headache and clothes that smelled awful for the entire day.  The first time I ever put a cigarette in my mouth and smoked it was in the 7th grade.  I was staying at a friends house and he stole a couple from his older brother.  As I coughed my way through it in the alley outside of his house, I remember wondering, “Why does anyone smoke these things?“.

I am older now, and I do a lot of things that my 12-year-old self probably would not understand.  However, we are still of one mind when it comes to smoking cigarettes.  I am grateful every time another law is passed that prevents smoking indoors, and support any increase in tobacco taxes.  Each time I see one of my friends light up I am not entirely sure why they do it, and wish that there was something I could do to convince them otherwise.

Recently, I learned of a new product called an Electronic Cigarette (E-Cigarette).  These devices look like cigarettes, and upon inhalation give smokers a hit of vaporized nicotine from a liquid cartridge.  The second hand smoke is harmless and has no odor.  While it still isn’t healthy to inhale nicotine vapor,  it is certainly less toxic than cigarette smoke.  I have already convinced one of my friends to switch to E-Cigarettes – her response after first taking a drag on one was “Wow, its so smooth!”  What’s even better, she is progressively reducing her dependence on nicotine by purchasing cartridges with a lower content of the drug.

Electronic Cigarettes

While I care about my friend’s health, I really want people to switch to E-Cigarettes for my own selfish reasons.  Mainly, I don’t like the smell of cigarettes.  If you are currently a smoker, perhaps now is the time to ask – is an E-Cigarette right for me?

Electronic Cigarettes – Quit Smoking (or at least give your lungs a break)

July 26th, 2009

We all know that Cigarettes are unhealthy.  They cause harm to those around you, and they smell terrible.  Because of this, many developed countries have banned smoking indoors.  I am sure that, if you are not a smoker yourself, you have at least one friend that would love to kick the habit, but never seems to be able to.  Addiction to Nicotine, and the habit-forming act of smoking, are a powerful combination to overcome.  However, a new option to fight this addiction has recently hit the market – Electronic Cigarettes.

Smoking an electronic cigarette is very similar to the experience of smoking a real cigarette.  Users take a drag on this device just as they would with a normal cigarette, and then inhale vapor containing an adjustable amount of Nicotine.  A cartridge containing liquid nicotine is vaporized by a battery-powered atomizer when the smoker inhales.  Users can choose the amount of nicotine in each cartridge (0-16mg), and begin to reduce their dependence on the drug.  An LED light glows at the end of the electronic cigarette, which gives the appearance of a real cigarette, and shows that the atomizer has been activated.  Smokers can enjoy many different flavors, including vanilla, menthol, and Camel or Marlboro imitations.

All of this is designed to satisfy the habit formed around the act of smoking.  The look, taste, and action of smoking are all attainable with an Electronic Cigarette.  In addition, the chemical addiction to Nicotine is satisfied without inhaling the toxins in tobacco and other harmful additives in normal cigarettes.  The exhaled vapor is odorless and harmless.

In addition to the health benefits, Electronic Cigarettes have other advantages.  First, because the secondhand smoke is harmless, they can be used indoors, and in other locations where normal cigarettes are banned.  That means no more going outside to smoke, or sitting in a room designated for smokers.  Additionally, smoking an Electronic Cigarette regularly is likely to save users money.  Especially in countries where tobacco products are heavily taxed, purchasing additional cartridges for an Electronic Cigarette is cheaper than purchasing packs of cigarettes.  For those uninterested in quitting, this product is still far superior to normal cigarettes.

Whether you are hoping to finally quit smoking, or simply want to smoke without the annoyance and health risks of cigarettes, give an electronic cigarette a try.
